When most people think of visiting Spain they quickly put Madrid or Barcelona on their list. Both cities are equally amazing and absolutely places everyone should see. But if you have some time to spend in this beautiful country, here's a few spots you might not have thought of but are worth the visit!
1. RHONDA
One of the oldest cities in Spain, Ronda packs a punch with it's stunning beauty sitting atop this majestic cliffside. The city sits in the heart of the Serrania de Ronda, about 40 miles/100kms from the city of Malaga. Stop here for this photo op and a stroll through the quaint city for a cup of coffee or glass of wine!
2. DENIA
If you are a fan of sleepy beach towns, then Denia is not to be missed! Just an hour south of Valencia, this coastal city has much to offer from hikes to beaches, a castle tour, and great restaurants! Be sure to check out the Denia Castle Tour for a quick day activity! There is also a beautiful day hike along the coastline that takes you up to an old tower called, Torre del Gerro.
3. THE ALHAMBRA PALACE IN GRANADA
It's on everyone's list and for good reason. This is the must see castle in Spain! There is nothing quite like it. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, this makes you feel like you just walked on set.
Access to the castle can only be granted by a tour company, and there are several to choose from Visit TripAdvisor here to pick the one that suits you. The castle is huge and really takes a whole day to see so don't try to rush this! Plan to spend the whole day there enjoying the history and beautiful architecture and grounds.
Even with the widest camera lens it was still hard to capture this beauty! Hands down, this was one of my most favorite things to see in Spain.
4. GIBRALTER
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and headland, on Spain's south coast. Now while this isn't technically Spain, if you are traveling the south coast, it's worth a stop for the unique things it has to see like it's dominate and famous landmark, the Rock of Gibralter.
The best way to see the rock is to take the arial tram up to the top, and then hike down. It's a great way to spend the day, and there's some interesting things to see including monkeys that greet you!
There are a few different places to explore inside the rock once you get going- the main attractions being Saint Michaels Cave, and the Great Siege Tunnels. The tunnels have a depth of information on the military defense in the world wars, which makes for a great little history lesson. The cave is a beautiful experience showcasing a working amphitheater. Purchase tickets right at the cave entrance (or pre-purchase online) and spend the afternoon wandering around inside. It's a great break from the heat and also a beautiful sight to take a few pictures and learn about the history!
5. MANZANARES EL REAL
Just north of Madrid by about 30 miles, lies Manzanares El Real, home of the Castle of los Mendoza. Last, but certainly not least on this list, this tiny town of about 7,000 people makes a fun day trip to escape the bustle of Madrid for a few hours. Purchase tickets right at the castle and follow the map for a self-guided tour!
